We started at about 6.5 months and are using the "baby led weaning" method which is basically just a fancy way of saying "skip the purees and let the kid do all the feeding." It's roots are with the crunchier folks, but I think it actually works great for the mom of 2 who likes to eat during mealtimes too. So far I have been amazed at how much coordination she already has. It is messier though! You should have seen the aftermath of the self-fed yogurt. :)
These were taken before Christmas and were her first attempts at solid food. It is more about the experience and introduction to tastes and textures and less about the actual quantity she is getting.
